Stop smoking concept

With 480,000 smoking-related deaths annually in the US, smoking definitely has a major impact on everyone. One major population that is impacted by smoking is pregnant women. In Indiana, the smoking rates among pregnant women are double the national average. Many people are aware that smoking causes cancer, heart disease, and other major health problems. However, there are also a number of harmful health effects that can occur before, during, and after pregnancy.

  • Before pregnancy: Smoking can make it harder for women to get pregnant.
  • During pregnancy: Smoking can increase the risk of miscarriage, premature birth, and low-birth weight.
  • After pregnancy: Smoking can increase the risks of ear infections, colds, asthma attacks, SIDS, and infant death.
